What is it like to live in Clayton?

Clayton is the former US Army base Fort Clayton, in the reverted areas of the Ancón district, next to the Panama Canal and the Miraflores Locks. Part of the base is now Ciudad del Saber (the City of Knowledge), a 120-hectare campus with UN agencies, universities, companies, a shopping plaza and parks; the rest is residential, with garden homes and low-rise buildings surrounded by forest.

It is the neighborhood for families at the international schools: Balboa Academy, King's College, Colegio Javier, Isaac Rabin and Las Esclavas are here, along with the US Embassy. That is why diplomats, international staff and expats look here, renting 3- and 4-bedroom houses in gated communities such as Embassy Club, Clayton Village or Los Senderos.

In exchange for quiet streets, big trees and wildlife at the doorstep, Clayton is car-dependent: there is no metro, shopping is concentrated in a few centers (Clayton Mall, Plaza Clayton, La Plaza at the City of Knowledge) and there is less inventory than in the high-rise districts.

Pros

  • Five well-known private schools, two of them English-language international schools, minutes from home.
  • The greenest part of the city: forest, wildlife and two protected areas next door.
  • Houses with gardens and pools in gated communities, rare elsewhere in the city.
  • The US Embassy and UN agencies at the City of Knowledge: an international community.
  • Parque Ciudad del Saber offers a gym, pool, courts and a dog park at low prices.

Things to know

  • Car-dependent: no metro and limited bus routes.
  • Few shops and no large supermarket inside the area; the big shop is usually done in Albrook.
  • No private hospital inside Clayton.
  • Smaller, less liquid inventory than in the high-rise districts.
